The First Counsel

Careers

The associate program.

Few hires, real files, direct correction. The program is designed to produce advocates and deal lawyers, not document processors.

What the work is

From the first month, associates work across both disciplines: due diligence and drafting on live transactions; research, pleadings, and court attendance on live defenses. Every associate sits with a partner, attends client meetings, and is expected to hold a view — and to defend it.

How training works

Written work is returned marked, in detail, every time. Advocacy is rehearsed before it is performed. Associates argue internal moots on the firm’s real questions, second-chair hearings early, and first-chair small matters as soon as they are ready — which is sooner than most firms allow and later than most associates want.

What we look for

Strong law, of course. Beyond it: clear writing, appetite for correction, and composure. We read the writing sample before the CV.

How to apply

Write to [email protected] with a CV, a transcript, and a writing sample of no more than five pages that you wrote alone. Applications are read by partners.
